A Guide to High Integrity Carbon Harvesting Projects

Carbon harvesting (the process whereby carbon credits are issued) refers to projects that either remove carbon from the atmosphere, or prevent emissions that would otherwise occur. Each project can issue carbon credits where typically 1 credit = 1 tonne of CO₂e, reduced or removed.

This can be done in several different ways. At Blufly, we are focused on high integrity projects.

Types of Carbon Projects

Removal Projects

Removal projects take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. These include reforestation, afforestation, mangrove and blue carbon restoration, regenerative agriculture, biochar, and emerging technologies like direct air capture.

Avoidance Projects

Avoidance projects prevent emissions from happening in the first place. These include forest protection (such as REDD+), renewable energy, energy efficiency, and clean cookstove initiatives.

An Introduction to Forest & Land Based Projects

What do they do?

Forest and land-based carbon projects work by protecting and restoring natural ecosystems that store large amounts of carbon in trees, soils, and vegetation. This includes preventing deforestation through REDD+ initiatives, restoring degraded forests through reforestation, regenerating soils via improved agricultural practices, and protecting high-carbon ecosystems such as mangroves, peatlands, and wetlands.

By keeping existing carbon locked in place or increasing the amount of carbon absorbed from the atmosphere, these projects not only reduce emissions but also support biodiversity, water systems, and the communities who act as long-term guardians of the land.

High Integrity Projects

High-integrity carbon projects go beyond counting tonnes of carbon. They deliver verified, measurable climate impact while investing in the people and ecosystems that make that impact last. These projects are independently verified, transparently managed, and designed to support local communities through fair livelihoods, long-term stewardship, and environmental safeguards, ensuring climate action that is not only effective today, but sustainable for generations to come.

REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation)

What is REDD+?

REDD+ is a UN-backed framework that incentivises developing countries to protect and sustainably manage forests by generating results-based payments for verified emissions reductions.

We support REDD+ projects, because they go beyond avoided deforestation to include forest conservation, sustainable forest management and enhancement of forest carbon stocks. Furthermore, they also embed social and environmental safeguards, recognising the rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities while delivering climate, biodiversity and livelihood benefits.

ARR (Afforestation, Reforestation & Revegetation)

What is ARR

ARR is a nature-based solution that restores and expands forests to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere. By planting and regenerating trees on degraded land, high-integrity ARR projects store carbon long-term while supporting biodiversity and the communities who protect these ecosystems.

Supporting ARR projects means investing in one of the most proven natural ways to remove carbon from the atmosphere. High-integrity ARR doesn’t just grow trees, it restores ecosystems, protects biodiversity, and creates sustainable livelihoods for the communities who safeguard these forests long term. It’s climate action that delivers measurable impact for both people and planet.

About the Projects we Partner with. FAQs

Where are your Projects Located?

We are currently focused on the Amazon, beginning with the Castañeros Project in Madre de Dios, Peru, developed in partnership with BAM. This is a region of extraordinary ecological importance and one of the most critical carbon sinks on the planet.

Our goal is to curate a portfolio of high-integrity projects that we have rigorously assessed and, wherever possible, visited ourselves. We are actively reviewing additional projects to expand our portfolio responsibly, ensuring every project we onboard meets our standards for environmental integrity, transparency and community impact.
